The information about KHV in Japan from Zen Nippon Airinkai

Dated on November 7, 2003

Dear ZNA members

ZNA We’re afraid that all the koi keepers over the world may be nervous to hear the occurrence of KHV in Japan and the cancellation of the 39th ZNA All Japan Nishikigoi Show. As we informed you on November 3, 2003, KHV koi were found in the Kasumigaura Lake, Ibaraki Prefecture. However, all those farms in the lake cultivate black carp for table.

The latest announcement (November 6, 2003) from The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan is as follows;

From the latest survey of the KHV in Japan

1 The Ministry ordered all the prefectural governments to investigate the local situation of the koi disease on November 2, 2003.

2 The reports from the prefectural governments on the above order;

Some dead black koi for table carried from the Kasumigaura Lake, Ibaraki in the following prefectures showed positive reaction of PCR test against KHV;

Aomori, Saitama, Yamanashi, Nagano, Mie, Okayama, Kochi, Fukuoka, Miyazaki.

(All those koi farms handle black carp for table, not Nishikigoi.)

At this moment (at 14:00 on November 7, 2003 Japan Time), no KHV has been found in Nishikigoi in Japan. However, Zen Nippon Airinkai decided to cancel the shows for the worst, in order to keep members’ koi from the disease.

Also we do appreciate if you would send the useful information about the KHV to us.

Thank you.

Seiichi Miyamori
